Solid Waste Management

SynTerra solutions support regulatory compliance and environmental sustainability.

Using a multidisciplinary approach, SynTerra designs advanced engineering solutions for commercial and industrial clients. We have a reputation for creative designs that progress rapidly through the permitting process, are built without major changes and delays, and function effectively once completed. To deliver those solutions and related designs, we draw on advanced expertise in the beneficial reuse and disposal of industrial solid waste, disposal of municipal waste, and management of hazardous waste.

SynTerra has been integral in the successful management of residuals at many pulp and paper mills. We also have provided comprehensive solutions for RCRA permitting, investigation, and closure at numerous industrial facilities.

Client challenge

Operators of a Southeastern mill, which produces more than 500,000 tons of paper products per year, wanted to reduce closure accrual cost related to an existing landfill. The company sought approval from a state environmental agency to use fiber sludge as a barrier layer in the final cover system.

SynTerra solution

SynTerra performed geotechnical evaluation and modeling to confirm that fiber sludge would be stable on the design slopes and meet the state agency’s permeability requirements. After helping the client gain approval for a revised Operating and Closure Plan based on a fiber sludge cap, SynTerra conducted quality assurance inspections of the site and assisted mill staff with task planning and scheduling.

With SynTerra providing technical justification for use of a sludge cap, regulatory reporting, and information for closure certification, the mill client obtained approval of the final cover system variance. The client also realized reductions in closure costs.
